2004 fall semester alumnus Zachary Colman briefly discusses his time on the program, including tips for prospective students!
What program were you in?
Fall Semester, 2004
What activities did you participate in?
Weekend Homestay, Shiga University Basketball Team
How did JCMU help you work towards your academic/professional goals?
JCMU was all about having fun, getting myself outside of my comfort zone and experiencing a totally different culture. I didn’t study Japanese before or after, but it is amazing how a semester abroad (specifically in a country that does not speak English and has a very different culture) can prepare you for the real world, where things are not as simple as they might typically be in college.
What would you say to prospective students who are considering JCMU?
Don’t get overwhelmed with your classwork because you want to spend as much time as you can making friends with your classmates and seeing Japan – even if it means taking a walk around Hikone every day. Also, Japan doesn’t have to be expensive, you just need to learn how to do it right.
We would like to thank Zachary for sharing his experiences with us, and we hope this inspires future students to consider studying abroad in Hikone!
