“Teaching English with Picture Books”

This presentation will introduce picture books and their applications for the ESL/EFL children’s classroom. There will be a large selection of  English language picture books on display on a variety of topics. The children’s books shown will concentrate on educational concepts, including: the alphabet, counting, colors, shapes, weather, seasons, animals, holidays and other topics. A handful of those books will be read and accompanying activities will be demonstrated along with techniques that can be adapted to each teacher’s favorite picture books.

The secondary intention of this presentation is to introduce picture books suitable for teens and adults. These books may be useful in the classroom for discussion of topics, practicing listening skills, building vocabulary, or used as reading and study outside of the classroom. Some of the topics will include human rights, social problems, empathy, love and loss, historical events and biography.

Time and space will be provided both before and after the presentation for participants to peruse the selection of picture books and discuss any related topics with the presenter.
