“American Country Music Used to Engage English Language Learners”

Abstract:
In attempting to increase student engagement in language classes, it can be helpful to appeal to students’ interests. If you have a student population that enjoys music (as doubtless many of us do), using country music, YouTube and a few other tools can make for an enjoyable lesson or unit.

Country music has several elements that make it easy for English language learners to digest. There are fewer non-standard vocabulary words, the tempo is often slower and the songs are often on relatable themes or tell a story that is easy for students to follow. The presenter will share the materials and lesson plans that she has developed and used for a 90 minute English camp activity, and audience members are encouraged to participate in a discussion on how they could be adapted, expanded or incorporated into other units or programs.
