From November 4th through November 6th, the Japan Center for Michigan Universities (JCMU) will be participating in the 2016 Youmacon anime convention! Youmacon is held annually each fall in Detroit, Michigan. The purpose of the convention is to bring together fans of Japanese pop culture (along with other similar fandoms) and create a space in which they can let loose and have fun for a weekend! Because Youmacon and JCMU are both focused on Japan, Youmacon was happy to invite JCMU to participate in their convention to help educate attendees on the importance of studying abroad.
For those of you that are unfamiliar with Youmacon, it is one of the largest conventions of its kind in the entire United States that attracts over 10,000 attendees annually. It celebrates the wildly popular world of Japanese media, including anime (Japanese cartoons), video games, manga (Japanese comics), and so on. They invite special guests from around the industry to speak and offer hundreds of panels hosted by both professional speakers and fellow fans. Attendees have the opportunity to purchase artwork from local artists at the Artists’ Alley, buy merchandise from specialty vendors, and play (at no additional cost) a wide array of video games ranging from League of Legends to Pop’n Music. All are encouraged to cosplay (short for “costume play”), or dress up as characters from their favorite series – in fact, some of JCMU’s volunteers that will be helping us maintain our booth are planning on cosplaying!
We believe that it is important to reach out to as many students as possible about the opportunities to study abroad in Japan that are available to them, and what better place to do this than an anime convention! Our first con was JAFAX, which turned out to be very successful. Several JCMU alumni were in attendance – in fact, the chair of JAFAX himself is a JCMU alumnus. Many other con-goers we met with were very interested in studying abroad in Japan, but had not heard about our programs before coming by our booth. We hope to repeat this success at Youmacon, where anime fans from around the state (and even around the nation!) come together and celebrate Japanese media. As this writer is an anime fan himself and will be the main representative at the JCMU Youmacon booth, he is very excited to help show other fellow con-goers the world of study abroad in Japan.
Below are the details for the event. If you are a JCMU alum or are interested in learning more about study abroad in Japan and will be at Youmacon, then we encourage you to visit our booth!

JCMU would like to thank Youmacon for providing us with this unique opportunity to reach out to other attendees interested in Japanese culture. We hope that this helps more students become aware of the study abroad possibilities available to them and encourages them to study abroad in Hikone.
